The CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon is on Saturday, November 7, 2026, with the marathon and half marathon both starting at 8:00 a.m. Eastern. It has a specific reputation in American distance running, and that reputation is the reason most people travel for it: the course is flat, the field is deep, and it produces Boston qualifiers in volume.
Why Runners Choose This Race
The course is USATF-certified and known for fast times. Since 2008 it has produced thousands of Boston qualifiers, which is the statistic that actually drives registration. If you are chasing a qualifying time or a personal best, a flat November course in a city where the weather usually cooperates is a rational target — and a great deal of the field is there for exactly that reason.
That has a consequence worth planning for. A race full of people running to a specific time is a race full of people running disciplined, even pacing. Early-race congestion is real, and going out with the crowd is easy because the crowd is moving well. Runners who blow up here often do so because the first 10K felt effortless in cool air on flat ground.
Central Indiana in early November is genuinely good marathon weather more often than not — cool starts, moderate afternoons. It is also unpredictable at the margins. Late-autumn Indiana can deliver a raw, windy morning, and there is very little elevation to break the wind on an exposed stretch. Pack for a colder morning than you expect and discard layers at the start.
The Distances
Race weekend includes the marathon, half marathon and a 5K. The marathon and half share the 8:00 a.m. start, which means the early miles are crowded with runners on two different plans — a factor if you are pacing carefully in the opening stretch.
Registration: Note the Real Deadline
Online registration opens at 12:01 a.m. ET on January 1 and closes at noon ET on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, or earlier if the race sells out. The sell-out clause is the one that catches people. A race with this reputation does not reliably stay open to the deadline, and treating November 4 as a decision date rather than a formality is how entries get missed.
If you miss online registration, entry may be available at the Monumental Health & Fitness Expo beginning 4:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, November 5, subject to availability. That is a genuine fallback, not a guarantee.
Expo and Packet Pickup Timing
Packet pickup happens at the expo, and the 2026 windows are:
- Thursday, November 5: 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
- Friday, November 6: 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
There is no race-morning packet pickup in that schedule, which is the single most important logistical fact for anyone travelling in. A Saturday race with Friday-evening pickup cutoff means you need to be in Indianapolis by Friday evening at the latest. Runners driving in Saturday morning from Chicago, Cincinnati or Louisville — all plausible drives — cannot collect a bib on arrival.
The Friday window is long enough to be flexible, but it closes at 8:00 p.m. Build in delay tolerance if you are flying into Indianapolis International on Friday afternoon.
Where to Watch
The race runs through central Indianapolis, and the practical spectating advice for a flat urban marathon applies here: pick two points on opposite sides of a loop rather than trying to follow a runner.
Downtown Indianapolis is unusually walkable for an American city of its size, and the compact core means a spectator on foot can reach multiple points of a city course without a car. The area around the start and finish gives you the two highest-energy moments, and the finish of a Boston-qualifying race has a particular quality — a lot of people arriving at a number they have worked toward for a year.
Bring layers. Standing still for two to four hours in November is considerably colder than running in it, which spectators consistently underestimate.
Making a Weekend of It
An early-November trip catches Indianapolis in a good stretch. The Monumental Marathon is on November 7, and the Spirit & Place Festival opens on November 5 and runs through mid-November, offering community-created events across Central Indiana. A runner arriving Thursday for expo pickup has two evenings to fill before the race and a festival programme running in parallel.
For accommodation, staying downtown is worth the premium for this particular race, because it removes a driving-and-parking variable from race morning and puts the finish within walking distance of your room. Being able to walk back to a shower rather than negotiate a car after 26.2 miles is not a small consideration.
A Note on Race Selection
If you are choosing between Monumental and a larger-profile November marathon, the trade-off is straightforward. Monumental is not a spectacle race — you are not running through five boroughs with a million people watching. What it offers instead is a fast course, sensible logistics, a field that knows what it is doing, and a genuinely high probability of running the time you trained for.
For a first marathon, that combination is arguably better than a famous one. Flat, cool, well-organised and mid-sized is a much more forgiving introduction than hot, hilly and enormous.
